The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) Board for Contractors regulates individual tradesmen who engage in the trades of electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), and gas fitting — along with other trades. Licenses for these 4 trades (electrical, plumbing, gas fitting and mechanical or HVAC), must be renewed every two years. In order to renew your license you must complete a 3-hour code update course for each trade (1-hour for gas fitters) that has been approved by DPOR. These courses, offered through the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), meet all of the DPOR requirements for licensure.
Individual trades professionals may also be subject to local ordinances, laws, or other requirements imposed by other state agencies, courts, or certain localities. Questions about local ordinances, etc. should be directed to the community in which the individuals plan to engage in their trade.
The Commonwealth of Virginia is currently enforcing the 2012 International Codes (2012 International Plumbing Code, 2012 International Mechanical Code, 2012 International Fuel Gas Code) and the 2011 National Electrical Code. These codes were adopted July 1, 2014. The 2015 codes (2014 NEC) are still in review and may not be adopted for some time. The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development completely revised the codes last code cycle and they are currently reviewing the latest codes. These courses satisfy current requirements for DPOR licensure and you will be receiving updates on the current code being enforced in Virginia. We will update these courses as soon as the Commonwealth adopts the new codes.
